Green your picnic

Labor Day is just around the corner.

Planning to light up the grill, host a cookout or simply indulge in a romantic picnic during the long weekend? Why not go the extra step when planning your party – and keep the environment in mind. Consider these green-entertaining tips:

1. Decorate the outdoors with environmentally responsible patio furniture. From bamboo recliners to recycled-plastic deck sets, there are plenty of options to meet various tastes, budgets and party sizes.

2. Use reusable paper goods - plates, cups, cutlery and napkins. For picnics in the park, consider an old-fashioned picnic set, complete with reusable plates, wine glasses and cloth napkins. Bring food and beverages in reusable containers.

3. Encourage guests to carpool to the party. Last-minute party needs? Jump on your bike instead of putting the key in the ignition. And don’t forget your cloth bags!

4. Lighten the amount of waste created from the party by composting.
Compost is one of nature’s best mulches and soil amendments. It makes a great eco-alternative to commercial fertilizer.
