News you can use Americans use 67 tons of newspaper each year. That’s a lot of baseball standings and stock listings piling up. The good news (pun intended) is that newspaper is recyclable. But since newsprint can only be recycled three to five times before it breaks down, it’s still better to use it a time or two for other purposes before pitching it into the recycling bucket. 1. RECYCLE AND BUY RECYCLED Through recycling and buying recycled products, you’re saving tons of natural resources and cutting down carbon emissions. It takes more energy to create something new than it does to recycle. Recycling aluminum cans, for example, saves 95 percent of the energy required to make the same amount of aluminum from its virgin source, bauxite. For many years, being environmentally responsible has been important to me. I am a member of the Sierra Club and the Audubon Society of Metro Denver. One of my former jobs was teaching an outdoor education program for the Audubon Society. I am also a member of the Mayor’s Greenprint Council and will be a member of the new Denver City Council’s Greenprint Committee. BUILT GREEN It’s not a new concept

Home builders have known how to “build green” for years, long before it was fashionable. Back in 1995, the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver (HBA), along with the Governor’s Office of Energy Management, Public Service Company of Colorado (now Xcel Energy) and E-Star Colorado created what was called the Built Green Colorado program.
