EarthWorks Expo shoots for zero-waste

When EarthWorks Expo returns to the Denver Merchandise Mart on June 21-22, it will again “walk the talk” and be a zero-waste event. Zero-waste is the recycling of all materials back into nature or the marketplace to protect human health and the environment. Last year, EarthWorks Expo, Denver’s largest green-living event of the year, was able to recycle or compost 97 percent of the waste from its 117 exhibitors and several thousand attendees – leaving only 65 pounds of trash for the entire three-day event. BUILT GREEN It’s not a new concept

Home builders have known how to “build green” for years, long before it was fashionable. Back in 1995, the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver (HBA), along with the Governor’s Office of Energy Management, Public Service Company of Colorado (now Xcel Energy) and E-Star Colorado created what was called the Built Green Colorado program. DENVER’S TRANSIT SYSTEM KEEPS A CARFUL EYE ON THE ENVIRONMENT

The Denver metro area’s bus system, RTD, is among the greenest in the country. The company has used new environmental technology to develop systems that “reduce emissions, conserve resources, address environmental concerns and improve the air quality of the metropolitan area.” RTD pioneered transit use of electric vehicles in 1982 on Denver’s 16th Street Mall. Whether the next president is Republican or Democrat, we know the fervor will continue to do business in the green; it’s all part of the greening of America. Colorado’s alternative energy industries, with encouragement from state and local governments, are in prime position to create a new green workforce. Renewable energy in Colorado is expected to add 5,700 jobs by 2010 and 17,000 jobs by 2020, according to Coloradans for Renewable Energy. The mission of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Aug. 25-28 here in Denver, is to produce the most environmentally sustainable political convention in modern American history. By the looks of things, Denver DNC planners are well on their way to reaching that lofty goal.
